Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa, and it is located in Arusha National Park. This attraction is often overlooked due to its proximity to Mount Kilimanjaro; however this is a perfect and interesting hike for those individuals who want to avoid the crowds on Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru is a steep and challenging hike, but it has beautiful scenery and an abundance of wildlife. This is a good option if you have a limited amount of time, but still want to do a trek as it only takes three or four days.
Pick up from hotel in Arusha or Moshi and drive 1 hour to Momella Gate. Hike 10km (approximately 4 to 5 hours) from Momella Gate to Mariakamba Hut. Have dinner and stay overnight.
Hike 4 km (approximately 2-3 hours) from Mariakamba Hut to Saddle Hut. If time permits, there is an option to climb slightly further up Mount Meru for a viewpoint of Mount Kilimanjaro. Dinner and spend overnight at Saddle Hut.
Hike from Saddle Hut to Meru Summit. Start to descend 14 km down the mountain back to Momella Gate (approximately 6-8 hours). Drive back to Arusha or Moshi.
Pick up from hotel in Arusha or Moshi to Momella Gate. Hike 10km (approximately 4 to 5 hours) from Momella Gate to Mariakamba Hut. Have dinner and stay overnight.
